Museo Max Portugal Ortiz
Proyecto Arqueológico Jach’a Machaca is in the planning phases of building a World-Class museum. Joel Zovar, a museum studies student from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, has designed the conceptual experience of the space as a journey through space and time drawing on the rich culture history of the Khonkho Wankane and the Jesus de Machaca region. As visitors enter the museum they are immediately submerged into a subterranean space that replicates the ritual experience of entering the Sunken Temple during the Formative Period. Visitors then move through different salons featuring distinct regional-based time periods such as the Tiwanaku, Pacajes, Inka-Pacajes, Colonial, and Republican periods. One salon focuses entirely on the monoliths. Another salon is dedicated to the unique oral history and present habitants of Qhunqhu Liquiliqui.
