A Body of Formative-Period Stone Sculpture

Previous

Iconographic representations found on Khonkho Wankane's red and gray sandstone monoliths (stone stelae) are helping us to identify key components of Formative Period peoples' understanding of their cosmos – how they understood their world. Apart from the exquisite stone artisanship, these unique masterpieces display humans, plants, reptiles, fish, mammals, and composite human-animal figures, such as the camelid seen at the foot of the Jinchun Kala.
